FAQs

Is custom software better than off-the-shelf tools for my business?

Off-the-shelf tools do a great job for most cases, and probably give you 80% of what you need. We're here for the other 20%. That specific order process that only your customers use. The need for an extra field that your software doesn't let you add. Linking to other systems you use. And with bespoke software, you get only the features you need, so it's not cluttered with unnecessary links that make it harder to use.

Who owns the intellectual property (IP) of custom software?

We want you to choose us for our expertise and service, not because you're stuck with us! For that reason we provide our services within an 'irrevocable and perpetual' licence. Put more simply, you can do what you like with our code: adapt it, change suppliers, move it to a different location. Meanwhile we retain the intellectual property ownership so that we can use code on different projects, so you get the benefit of our previous work.

Can custom web software integrate with tools like Xero, Sage or HubSpot?

Absolutely. We usually use a common data format called API that connects between various different tools, and is offered by pretty much every software system. That means we can send data to or from any system, and update your custom software or website. For example, sending a completed order to Sage to create an invoice; sending vehicle information to the government's DVLA service; or collecting accurate addresses from Google.

How long does it take to build a custom web application?

Development time for custom web applications varies hugely depending on your requirements. A simple online feature could take a few weeks, while most bespoke software takes at least 6 months. We'll work with you to manage expectations, and often recommend starting with a smaller set of requirements so you can grow over time.

What is your process for developing new software?

Requirements - We work hard to understand what you and your users really need.
Planning - Flexible to your schedule and budget (but no promises we can't keep).
Development - Bespoke online software made quicker by our starting framework.
Testing - Multiple checks at every level to ensure an easy user experience.
Launch - Secure hosting, included training, and extra technical requirements.
Evolution - We still get most of our work from existing clients asking for more.

What happens to my web software if Bluelinemedia disappears?

You may have reservations about using 'proprietary' software against off-the-shelf. What if you want to move on? Can anyone else support the system? What if we all retire to Italy?

We understand. We don't want clients to be tied to us, because we want them to choose an ongoing relationship (and they do). So we make sure you stay in control:

Your software is built with PHP, an 'open source' programming language that doesn't require a licence
Developers working with PHP are one of the largest coding communities
Our terms provide an 'irrevocable, perpetual licence' that gives you complete freedom to change the code
All our code includes 'commenting', notes that help any developer to understand how things work
We can even set up a hosting account in your name, or a server in your office, for ultimate physical control

Is custom software really secure?

You may be apprehensive about putting your business data 'on the cloud'. Security is absolutely fundamental to what we do.

Familiar products like WordPress or Microsoft Office experience security attacks because they are so well known. Your bespoke software is unique, so it's unlikely to be a target.

Our default security features include encrypted passwords, obfuscated data fields and IP restrictions. Our software has even been 'penetration tested' by Deloitte. And we can add as much bespoke security as you need.
