Dan Roam's Back of a Napkin (how to solve problems and sell ideas with pictures) gives an interesting guide to a more visual way of working things out and explaining to others. More interestingly for us, it talks about the importance of basic, instinctive visual cues to allow people to instantly 'get' something even when there's lots of information involved.

I think there's something important there for developing software and getting the interface right with subtle clues of shape, colour and style that guide people to what they're interested in ? you can present a lot of information very quickly if you get the visual language right.
