This fascinating book by James Surowiecki explains how in many cases large groups can make better decisions than a small number of experts. Examples include finding a lost submarine, betting on sports events and the cause of a space shuttle disaster.
There seem to me to be some pretty clear lessons for software development too, because we're looking for that same 'aggregate' result that provides the best possible experience for a group (rather than exactly what one person needs). The key challenge (as in the book) is how you bring those opinions or needs together. Read more...
